1. Can you introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Matthieu ROBIN, CEO and founder of Hidora. So much for the official presentation, but between you and me, my passion can be summed up as sharing, exchanging, community and a passion for IT. As a former system administrator, navigating between AS400, Windows NT and ESXi, then Linux, BSD and containers for a long time now, I'm still passionate about technology!
Founder of DevOpsDays Geneva for over 6 years, and of the Geneva DevOps Meetup for 8 years, I love sharing and giving talks.
2. What's your specialty? What's your favorite language?
I'm not a DEV... so I don't really have a favorite language. My goal is to understand devs to give them the tools, infrastructure, stability, and ease they need to meet business needs.
I don't have a favorite language, but I do speak Linux, containers and Kubernetes :-D
3. Are you a returnee (have you previously worked in a field other than IT)?
I fell into IT at the age of 10...that's 30 years ago. I had received some insurance money following an accident, and was able to buy my first personal computer, a Pentium 133 MMX... with a 14” cathode screen! More... Wanadoo 56k modem, and then... a passion for IT! Overclocking, video games (CS, Unreal,...), first website with Dreamweaver, Dual boot Linux! We had fun... and made a living of it.
4. What did you study?
School and me... that makes 2...
I did my BAC STI ( Sciences et Technologies Industrielles), then started a computer engineering school in Geneva... failure, programming isn't my thing at all...
A year's sabbatical to learn accounting and Italian, and I enrolled in the Haute Ecole de Gestion ( Computer Management)... very interesting... but a failure... I needed money, so I worked... So at 22 I found myself without a diploma... but with a bit of experience.
5. How did you get started in the professional world? Internship, work-study program, direct employment?
I started working summers at a very early age (16, in a factory), then as a bricklayer, decorator, bakery assistant, computer salesman in a shopping mall, letter carrier in a large insurance company, screw-cutting... I found my first real IT job at the age of 22 in a fixed-term contract where the mission was to help migrate from Lotus Notes to Outlook on Blackberry... Then I was called for a long-term mission for level 1 support (desktop, printer, password reset, etc...). Then I moved on to the professional world, ending up as a project manager and system administrator in complex, high-availability trading environments.
Then I left that world to open my first company, which was a consulting firm specializing in monitoring. 2 years later, I stopped everything and set up Hidora with partners.
I also became a professor at the Haute Ecole de Gestion, sharing my passion for service industrialization with 3rd-year Bachelor students!

Can you tell us more about Hidora? How was the company born? Where does the name come from?
I created Hidora in 2015/2016... The goal was to provide a container-based cloud platform directly on physical server. All with a nice developer-oriented interface, to simplify their life with infrastructure.
The project started in 2016. My aim was to provide a developer-oriented cloud, but with the capacity to support production of course.1 year after the start-up and the first customers, we quickly realized that customers didn't know how to manage containers, didn't know how to migrate their VMs to containers... So we added consulting, and managed services for our customers. We support them from start to finish... We're their Ops in DevOps ;-)
Today, the platform is working very well, customers are very happy with the service... and we're only growing! Very few customers leave Hidora... We're doing more and more Azure, AWS migration to Hidora 🙂
In 2025, we'll be releasing a new platform, this one aimed at SMBs and large accounts... Stay tuned ^^

A few words about DevOpsDayGE?
I created DevOpsDays Geneva with a single objective: to bring together people who love IT, and share their problems, their solutions...
You come as you are... just a first name with a background... You'll come across freelancers, devs, sysadmins, but also CTOs, DSIs, CEOs... all in a good atmosphere, and with no financial pressure...
You live in Geneva. What do you like about the city?
I don't live in Geneva itself... I'm in a small village, Rolle, which is in the middle of Lausanne and Geneva, on the shores of Lake Geneva.
But if we're talking about Geneva, I like the international side of the city, the business side (lots of big group headquarter), but also the possibility of sitting in a park with a view of Lake Geneva and Mont-Blanc... It's priceless!
8. Do you have any other passions?
My family!
I'm the step-dad of 7-year-old twins, and I'm married, which is my top priority! But they also understand that Hidora is part of me. A nice work/life balance.
9. Can we see you at conferences or meetups? Where else can we follow you?
I love giving talks, I love sharing! You can find me at IT meetups in the Geneva area, but also at some conferences on AI, blockchain, marketing...
I'm mainly on Linkedin, and a bit on Twitter...don't hesitate ;-)
10. Does your job correspond to your dreams?
I love what I do, the life I live! I've got a great team, a family that follows me, support from everyone, I love it!
Nothing to change for the moment ;-)
11. What advice would you give to those just starting out in the IT professions, and more specifically in dev?
Don't focus on education, focus on experience! As CEO, when I look at a CV, I look at the experience, the portfolio... rarely the studies...!
The person must be eager to learn, eager to share! And above all, not be afraid of failure... repeated if necessary!
Technique can be learned, attitude is more complicated!
12. What are your 3 most-used tools in your daily dev life? (it can be anything you want as long as it's related to your daily dev life: book, website, mug, software, etc.)?
I'm not a dev, but I'm into CEO tools:
Spark for e-mails
Mattermost for team and customers
Busycal for the calendar
Our ERP
Excel (not much choice ^^)
VScode
Lens
